Dr. Jill and P.J. say, “Focus on Exercise, Sleep, and Nutrition for Preventative Care.

Healthy Kids Pediatrics, Nutley NJ, Dr. Jill Garripoli (2)When the name of your practice is ‘Healthy Kids’ Pediatrics, you might know a thing or two (or three) about preventative care.  Dr. Jill Garripoli Pedalino and P.J, Pimpinelli, PA-C, help families stay proactive when it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and making smarter lifestyle choices at their office on Franklin Avenue.

Here are 3 tips that will help you keep your kids out of their office and that will also help you be a better parent by implementing the same advice for yourself.

Tip #1: Stay Active!

We all need fuel to keep our bodies functioning, but if we don’t stay active enough to burn off the extra calories we will gain wait. Get involved in local sport activities like soccer, swimming, or basketball. If that’s not possible, get moving anyway by having a daily dance party or walk around the neighborhood.

Our bodies rest and rejuvenate when we get enough sleep giving us enough energy to be active and stay fit during the day. Children should be getting at least 8-10 hours of sleep per night, so it is important to evaluate your child’s sleep routine and be sure to eliminate distractions or other pitfalls that infringe on that very valuable recovery period of the day.”

Tip #3: Make Nutritious Diet Choices!

Most kids love snacks, juices, and desserts, all of which fill them up and leave no room for healthy foods. Extra calories from “filler” foods not only lead to weight gain, but they deprive children of the vitamins and minerals packed into the healthier proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Eliminate the urge to snack by being mindful of your supermarket purchases…your children will only be able to reach for healthy foods when that is all that is available. Snacks and desserts can be served less often (once or twice a week, for example) to curb kids’ cravings and still maintain their appetite for the healthy foods you serve them.

Best wishes from the HKP Team!
